When the religious leaders tried to discredit Jesus by questioning his profession, they had no idea that their actions would make him even more famous. After all, who wouldn’t want to study under the greatest carpenter of all time? But it’s not only because of his carpentry skills that Jesus deserves our praise.
Jesus, who was a carpenter in his youth, is known for many things. Jesus was a carpenter and certainly had his hands regularly involved with construction, but there are also many other things he did with his hands as well.

Bible Verses About Jesus Being A Carpenter
The Bible mentions Jesus’s carpentry work in several places. Here are a few examples:
1 Corinthians 9:22: “Do I speak these things from human wisdom or from God? Or do I not know that [the] Lord gives to all [men] liberally and upbraids not?”
Galatians 3:28: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 12:11: “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Jesus was a carpenter. He was a carpenter for most of his life, and he made all kinds of things. But he didn’t just make tables and chairs. He made crosses too, and he made them so well that they were used to kill him.
Jesus was a carpenter, and his father was also a carpenter. It’s likely that he learned his trade from watching his father and other craftsmen in Nazareth.
In fact, the Bible says that Jesus was “the son of Joseph” (Matthew 1:16). The New Testament also refers to him as “the carpenter’s son” (Mark 6:3) and “the carpenter from Nazareth” (Mark 6:4).
One of the most famous stories about Jesus’ carpentry career is found in Mark 6:3-6, which tells us that he went to the city of Capernaum with his mother and brothers after his father died. While there, he helped his brothers build houses for their families. The Bible even says that he worked as a carpenter for four years before beginning his ministry!
Jesus was a carpenter, and his father was also a carpenter.
Jesus said that a man should be honest in his work. He said that there are many kinds of work, but the same God gives the strength to do them all. He also said that no matter what kind of work you do, it will be well done if you do it to the best of your ability. He told his disciples to take care of their animals and their tools so they would last.
A carpenter’s rule was used by Jesus to measure the size of things he made or repaired. He used this rule when he measured the temple and when he measured people’s hearts before healing them with faith.
Matthew 13:55-56
“Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?”
Matthew 4:21-22
Jesus answered, “The truth is, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. But I tell you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.
The Four Carpenters In The Bible
Zechariah 1:18–21 KJV 1900
18 Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns. 19 And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. 20 And the Lord shewed me four carpenters. 21 Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.
In Zechariah chapter 1, the prophet is being shown a vision. In this vision he is shown four horns, or as other translations state it, 4 powers that have risen up.
Zechariah asks the angel…what are these four horns…the angel responds, these are the horns that have come and scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
Four power…four spirits…four attacks working to scatter the work of God.
Can I tell you this morning that the purpose and the plan of the enemy is the same today as it was in the days of Zechariah…
The bible told Simon Peter in vs 31 “Simon, Satan desires to sift you as what!
His desire is to scatter.
He hunts like a roaring lion…seeking whom he may devour…
A silent lion has already isolated his prey and is simply going to attack and destroy..
But a roaring lion is working to scatter and isolate
Scatter your faith
Scatter our families
Scatter our desire to serve the Lord
Scatter the ministry!
Scatter the church
But there is a solution to the scattering power of the enemy! God has provided a solution!!
Zechariah 1:20–21 NKJV
20 Then the Lord showed me four craftsmen. 21 And I said, “What are these coming to do?” So he said, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, so that no one could lift up his head; but the craftsmen are coming to terrify them, to cast out the horns of the nations that lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.”
The imagery that is used in the vision of Zechariah for the scattering work of the enemy are 4 horns…4 horned beasts. 4 charging bulls perhaps…
And the Lord speaks to the prophet and says the solution that I have provided for these powerful spirits that have come to scatter are carpenters.
4 carpenters…
Why not 4 bodybuilders?
4 ninjas
4 soldiers?
But 4 carpenters?!?
The solution for the spirits that scatter is always a building spirit!
Build altars – The Old Testament patriarchs were men that built altars unto the Lord.
1. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob all built altars unto the Lord
2. Noah built altars
3. Elijah built altars
Altars are types of sacrifice, consecration and worship.
Altars are types of sacrifice, consecration and worship.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
When you build an altar, you drive away the spirit that has come to scatter!
1. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob all built altars unto the Lord
2. Noah built altars
Those that are trying to have a relationship with God without sacrifice…without worship…without sacrifice are only fooling themselves.
#2. Jude 20 KJV 1900
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,Jude 20–21 KJV 1900
20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
3. Elijah built altars
#31 Thessalonians 5:11 KJV 1900
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
Efify – Greek word Oikodomay to build)
#4. Matthew 16:18 NKJV
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

The Spirit Of The Carpenter
“Again proclaim, says the Lord of hosts, my cities again shall spread through prosperity, comforting Zion and choose Jerusalem as his own. When I looked up there were four horns…. representing the nations that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem. Then the Lord showed me four carpenters… “What are these men coming to do?” I asked. The angel replied, “These four horns – these nations – scattered and humbled Judah. Now these carpenters are coming to terrify them and cast out the horns of the nations that lifted their horn against the land of Judah” (Zechariah 1:17-21).
God decrees that He is going to prosper and bless his people. In fact, earlier in Joshua 1:5 God told Joshua that “no man will be able to stand against you all the days of your lives, for I will be with you, and I will not fail you or forsake you.” He was saying that you should have good success, be prosperous everywhere you go, and that no man will be able to stop you.
Think about this: every relationship that God enters into lifts people, builds their strength, and multiplies their life. God’s dream for you is so much bigger than yours. He promises prosperity and good success. Why is this important? Because it matters to God.
When God can take you beyond anything you ever imagined and He can take you places you have only dreamed about.
No one said that we would not face obstacles. But obstacles are simply Satan’s ploy to discourage you and cause you to quit. Zechariah (18-19), talks about a vision…a vision of four horns, or four spirits oppressing God’s people. People in the vision had their heads down, not confidant, not blessed, and feeling very defeated. God in that same vision also saw four carpenters. Carpenters build foundations. Jesus was a carpenter himself, and built the ultimate foundation for our lives. Let’s look at the four horns referenced and how these are dealt with.
Four types of Horns (spirits) you may experience in your Life
- Spirit of Lack – In your mind there is never enough. You lack money, education, love, joy, and confidence.
- Spirit of Limitation – There is never able to achieve anything. You are limited in thinking and believe there are barriers preventing you from achieving.
- Spirit of Hindrance – You are moving forward but it is a constant struggle. The wall seems bigger with every step forward, causing you step back and reconsider the attempt.
- Spirit of Devouring – This spirit tries to take back what you have already achieved.
The Spirit of the Carpenter overcomes the four types of Horns
- For your trouble you shall have double – “Double for your trouble. “ (Isaiah 61:7)
- Key people are coming into your life – Help is on the way.
- If you proclaim the spirit of limitation is broken, you will break the spirit of failure.
Connection Questions
- Do you feel “horns” in your life are preventing you from becoming all that you can be?
- A carpenter is a person who builds a foundation for a safe dwelling place. Do you feel like your foundation is solid and secure or shaky and unsteady?
- What are ways you need Jesus to lift you up? Where are some areas you desire to prosper and thrive? Can you boldly declare, in faith, that God is with you and wants the best for you? Do you truly believe that God wants to prosper you?
Final Thought
The enemy comes to oppress you so that you can’t even lift your head, and you go around defeated and oppressed. But the spirit of the carpenter stands ready to build you up, raise you up, and to lift your head so you can see the wonderful things God has for your future. If you will have faith and the proper perspective, God will take places you never dreamed you would go. Believe!
