One of the most important questions to ask when considering whether or not you want a relationship with someone is to consider the implications for the family that will result from it. Families are hugely important in today’s society, and unfortunately many people do not take families as seriously as they should. One factor that should be considered is if your potential spouse is a follower of Jesus Christ. If he or she is not saved, then your children could end up following his or her example and rejecting Christ entirely. Using Bible verses about unequally yoked, you can help protect yourself and others from succumbing to this serious issue.

Unequally Yoked Sermon
If you’re in a relationship with someone who has different beliefs, you may have heard that it’s not the best idea to be unequally yoked. What does this mean? It comes from Deuteronomy 22:10, which says “Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together,” and describes two animals that are alike in strength as being equally yoked. So, if two people are believers in Jesus Christ and they get married, they are equally yoked. If one of them is not a believer or doesn’t even really know what it means to be a Christian, then they aren’t equally yoked. This can lead to trouble down the road! Get some verses together to help you understand what it means to be unequally yoked and how God wants you to act if you find yourself in this situation.
Deuteronomy 7:3-4
As Christians, we are to be careful not to be unequally yoked. The Bible clearly prescribes that marriage is between one man and one woman (Genesis 2:18-25). Some may say they can marry someone outside of their faith and still be saved, but this is not what God says. He has made the rules very clear on this issue, so it’s important that we follow them for our own benefit as well as for those around us who need a good example in order to follow Christ themselves.
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
God has a plan for you. Sometimes, however, we can get distracted along the way and lose sight of that purpose. This is why it’s important to stay grounded in your relationship with God—and equally important to be in a right relationship with other people as well. In 2 Corinthians 6:14-18, Paul urges Christians to maintain their purity by avoiding relationships that could cause them harm or hinder their walk with Christ. He writes:
15 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? Or what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate…
Psalm 1
Psalm 1:1-3
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in judgment or be counted worthy to receive blessings from God
Genesis 3:3
Genesis 3:3
So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above every animal of the field. You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring.” This is an example of how God has a purpose for everything in His creation including unequally yoked relationships. Adam had chosen to take Eve as his partner despite what God had said about it because he loved her (Genesis 2:25) but that choice also resulted in their downfall!

- Don’t be proud (Romans 12:16)
- Don’t be rude (Romans 12:18)
- Don’t be selfish (Romans 13:5-7)
- Don’t be bitter (1 Corinthians 13:6)
- Don’t keep a record of wrongs that others have done to you, but rather, “forget about what is behind and strain toward what is ahead” (Philippians 3:13-14). Also see 1 Corinthians 13:5-8; Matthew 6:12 and Ephesians 4:26-28 on not harboring anger against others
Unequally yoked relationships are not something that God desires
As Christians, we know that God wants us to be with someone who shares our beliefs. We also know he doesn’t want us to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. But what does it mean to be unequally yoked? Unequally yoked relationships can happen when two people have different spiritual beliefs or live together outside of marriage (1 Corinthians 7:12). Whether you plan on getting married someday or not, there are still great reasons why Christians should avoid unequally yoked relationships.
Unequally Yoked Friendships
When two people commit to marriage, they shouldn’t do it knowing that their spouse will make them miserable. And while we want to believe that our spouses are different than the rest of the world, that isn’t always true—not even if they come from different religious backgrounds. In fact, some Christians believe they can cite verses in the Bible that show it’s wrong to date or marry someone who is not a believer (1 Corinthians 7:12-16).

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”

For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. What Bible Verse Says Do Not Be Unequally Yoked
We all have different beliefs, values and standards, there is no right or wrong religion. God created all of us in His image and likeness so it goes without saying that he sees our differences as beautiful. He loves diversity and has given each of us free will to make choices in life based on the education we receive and the experiences we have. Through those decisions we may choose to focus on Him more, or less than our neighbor.
The Bible tells us to “abstain from all appearance of evil.” That includes getting involved with someone who does not share the same faith—it just isn’t fair to you or your partner. So, are you dating someone who has different beliefs than you? Or maybe you’re already married to an incompatible spouse? Here are a few Bible verses about unequally yoked couples that might help you through this difficult situation.

Conclusion
With all of these verses in mind, I hope you can see how God desires for us to be with someone who loves Him as much as we do. Unequally yoked relationships can cause strife for both parties and should definitely be avoided if possible. While it may seem like the easy choice, or perhaps even the only choice at times, staying unequally yoked is not something that God wants for us. If you’re unsure about your relationship with someone, take time to pray over it and seek His will in your life. You don’t have to make any rash decisions or end things overnight—I recommend taking time to pray about what He would have you do but also listening to what other reputable Christian counselors might think on this subject, then making a decision based off of your prayerful research.
