Bible Verses About Vengeance

Vengeance is the Lord’s. It’s one of the 10 commandments, but isn’t it something you seek to do yourself? That’s just human nature. We want to take revenge on those who wrong us or cause us harm, I know I do. Does God want us to submit ourselves to his will and allow things to take their course no matter what that may be? Or does he expect us to make decisions based on justice while honoring him?

The Bible was written by the Hebrews, who believed that the world was controlled by Yahweh – their god. The Hebrews believed that humans were inherently sinful. They also believed that humans were only capable of sinning because they had free will – which meant that Yahweh could not be responsible for their wrongdoings. Therefore, if someone committed a crime against you or your family, it was your responsibility to take vengeance on them yourself.

These days we understand that there are many factors that contribute to criminal behavior; however, at the time these books were written there was little knowledge about psychology and no real concept of rehabilitation or treatment options outside of prison sentences.

Gods Vengeance On The Wicked

Scriptures that address vengeance, such as the Lord’s Prayer, are often used to support the idea of an eye for an eye. Psalms for example is filled with passages urging God’s people to “turn away from evil and do good.” Psalm 5:1 even says, “Listen to my cry for help, O LORD; let my cry reach you! Do not hide your face from me or answer me in anger.” However, taken out of context God’s justice isn’t always exactly what humans mean by “vengeance”. The Hebrew term חן (‘hen’, i.e. to have compassion) used in the Bible frequently translates into English as “vengeance”, but this is a misunderstanding of the concept behind these words.

The Bible is filled with verses about vengeance, because it’s an important concept in the Bible. The writers of the Bible wanted readers to know that taking vengeance into their own hands was wrong, but that God would take care of it through his justice system.
