I’m going to let you in on a secret that’s helped me lead a more fulfilling life: the key to happiness is gratitude. While I’m not suggesting that you should be eternally happy for all of your problems, one thing I’ve learned is that sometimes we should seek out opportunities to show our gratitude, even if it’s for things we think are troubling us. This poem explores these ideas and more, so take a minute or two to read through it and reflect on its meaning.
I asked for strength, and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
Whether you are facing a difficult time in your life or not, this poem can help you understand that God gives us what we need.
We have all heard the saying, “God never gives us more than we can handle.” This is true because anything that happens to us is an opportunity for growth and development. You may be wondering how this could possibly be true when you feel like your life is falling apart or if things aren’t going your way. In fact, there are no coincidences in life! God has everything planned out perfectly and He knows exactly what each one of us needs at any given moment in time to grow stronger spiritually and emotionally. Even if the circumstances surrounding our lives seem negative or difficult on the surface level (just like James Dillard Freeman’s prayer), they are actually helping make us stronger on deeper levels where it matters most – inside ourselves!
As long as we give ourselves permission through our thoughts & feelings about these situations/circumstances happening right now; whatever they may be…we’ll find ourselves growing as humans both mentally AND spiritually throughout each one individually which leads back around again into those other areas listed above too! If nothing else though it helps remind us constantly that no matter what happens around here on earth right now–things will turn out just fine eventually 🙂
I asked for wisdom, and God gave me problems to solve.
“I asked for wisdom, and God gave me problems to solve. I sought after knowledge, and He showed me things I could do. I looked at the end of my life with despair and saw that it was good.”
James Dillet Freeman, Prayer For Protection
I asked for prosperity, and God gave me brain and brawn to work.
What is a prospering life? A prospering life is not about the money you have in your pocket, but it’s about the knowledge that you have in your mind. It’s about the ideas that are constantly flowing through your mind; whether they’re good or bad is up to you. The more knowledge that you gain from experience, the more prosperous you become because this helps solve problems which leads to happiness and success!
One day as I was walking through a forest near my house, I came upon a rock with some writing on it: “God gave us our ability to think” This means if we stop thinking then we will be poor! So next time someone asks what makes someone successful all they need do is ask themselves… How much do they think?
I asked for courage, and God gave me dangers to overcome.
Courage is not the absence of fear, but grace and power to act in spite of it.
This is James Dillet Freeman’s prayer that he wrote for a local church in Dallas, Texas. He said that one day he was sitting down and asked himself what would be the greatest courage I could ask for? It came to him that it was courage to face difficulties and dangers. He had always tried to avoid danger, but now he realized that God has given him these dangers so he could overcome them.
Prayer points for protection from enemies
There are many ways to help others. You can donate money or food, share a meal with someone who is alone, or volunteer your time at a local shelter. But if you truly want to make a difference in the world and change lives for the better, there’s one method that works better than all others: Asking God for guidance and then following his instructions.
In his prayer “On Being Asked,” James Dillet Freeman writes:
“I asked for love, and God gave me troubled people to help.” It’s true! In asking for love from God (which is different from seeking it from other humans), he gave me my life’s mission: To help others through their struggles by showing them how much I care about them—and how much they matter even when they don’t feel like they do anymore.
I asked for favors, and God gave me opportunities.
When I asked for favors, God gave me opportunities. Opportunities to help others, grow, and learn how to help others grow. I learned that when you ask for favors, you may get what you want at first, but it’s unlikely that it will last long. When we ask God to give us opportunities instead of things or physical needs like health and money, then things last longer because they are built on a foundation of love rather than greed or self-interest.
And when I prayed for peace of mind… God gave me “You.”
Peace of mind is a wonderful thing. It’s important to be able to sleep well at night, knowing that everything will be fine in the morning. We should be grateful for the things we receive, and also for the opportunities given to us by God. After all, He gave us “You.”
That is why I pray for peace of mind:
“Lord, please help me find peace.”
This poem reminds us that we should be grateful not only for the things we receive but also the things we are given an opportunity to do.

- We should be thankful for the things we have been given.
- We should be grateful for the things we are given an opportunity to do.

This poem is a reminder that sometimes the best gifts we can receive are those that give us an opportunity. It’s easy to be grateful for things we receive, but it takes a special attitude of appreciation to find joy in the opportunities life presents us with. This poem reminds us that part of being grateful for everything life has given to us means recognizing and thanking God for those opportunities.
I pray that you will protect me from all danger in this world, and especially from all sin.
I pray that you will surround me with your holy angels, that they may guard my way, and keep me safe from every evil thought and deed.
I pray that you will give me a pure heart and mind, that I may not be led astray by the temptations of this world or the devil.
I pray that you will help me to be kind to others and to treat them as I would want to be treated myself.
“The Traveler” ~ James Dillet Freeman Dear Lord, I cannot see– But this I know, although the road ascends And passes from my sight, That there will be no night; That You will take him gently by the hand And lead him on Along the road of life that never ends, And he will find it is not death but dawn. I do not doubt that You are there as here, And You will hold him dear. Our life did not begin with birth, It is not of the earth; And this that we call death, it is no more Than the opening and closing of a door– And in Your house how many rooms must be Beyond this one where we rest momently.Dear Lord, I thank You for the faith that frees, The love that knows it cannot lose its own; The love that, looking through the shadows, sees That You and he and I are ever one!
