Bible Verses About Enduring Tough Times

Fear has a way of twisting logic.

It’s the voice that tells you can’t do it. That you’re not good enough. Not strong enough. Not enough.

The voice that says you have failed too many times, so you better just give up now before you fail again.

If you are feeling tired, discouraged, disheartened, disappointed, and you just want to give up, read on.

The Bible has so much to say on this topic and it calls fear out for what it is – fear is a liar.

Look over the powerful words in Scripture encouraging you to never give up.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. – Hebrews 12:1-3

To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment. – 1 Corinthians 4:11-13

But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. – 1 Peter 2:20

So that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience. – Colossians 1:10-11

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had. – Romans 15:4-5

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? – Hebrews 12:7

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. – James 1:2-4

Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. – 2 Timothy 2:11-13

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. – Romans 5:3-5

And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 2:20-22 ESV / 7 helpful votes

For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: “The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire.”

Hebrews 3:12-14 ESV / 7 helpful votes

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

John 16:33 ESV / 7 helpful votes

For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.

Bible Verses About Hope In Hard Times

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1 (ESV)

The Bible is full of promises that God will never leave us or forsake us. He wants to give us the hope we need when the world seems dark, and when we feel like we are drowning in the waves of life.

Hope is one of the most important things in life, because without hope, what do we have?

Hope helps us get through difficult times — whether they be personal or national — and gives us something to hold onto when everything else seems to be falling apart.

God is the God of hope. When you are in the middle of a trial, you can find hope through the Bible. The following Bible verses about hope in hard times can help you to know that God is with you, even when it seems like everything is falling apart.

Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 42:11

Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.

Psalm 71:5

For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

The Bible has loads of verses about hope, including these 10:

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12)

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways.” (Proverbs 4:25-27)

“The LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God who understands; he knows your frame. He remembers that you are dust.”

The Bible is full of verses about hope. “Hope” is one of the most used words in the Bible. In fact, it’s used over 100 times in the King James Version.

I am reminded of a time when I was going through some hard times in my life. I had just started a new job and my husband and I were having some trouble with infertility. The thought of trying to have a baby seemed impossible at times and I felt like God had abandoned me because we hadn’t been able to conceive yet.

I would often pray and ask God why He couldn’t just make it happen for us like so many other people who were having children. Eventually, though, I learned that God didn’t answer all prayers the way we think He should or want Him to respond.

One day while reading my Bible, I came across this verse from Psalm 73:26-28 (KJV):

For when by reason of time you shall be changed, And take no pleasure in them; But shall say: “Oh that my days were prolonged; And that men might behold me!

If this be your lot, Oh that you also would receive your lot

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.”

Proverbs 13:12 (NIV)

“Hope is not to be put in time or in hours; days and years are not its measure. It is a faculty to be exercised by the soul through faith, and it must ever be ready to act as a handmaid of love.”
