Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. What a person desires also determines his actions. The one who loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich. The wicked obtain what they plan for, but those who plan good things get them as well.
Their speech was smooth as butter, but war was in their hearts. They have made themselves beautiful with their lips, but their hearts are cruel and deceitful; they have used their tongues for evil purposes. They sit in ambush by the roadside waiting to pounce on the simple ones who pass by unaware of danger; they set traps for those who obey God’s commands by doing what is right. Those who have a hard heart have many troubles; all whose ways are crooked will not prosper!

Godly people have a soft heart. They are sensitive to the needs of others and compassionate toward them. They weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. They are merciful and kind, always seeking to do good to others.
Not so with wicked men. Their hearts are hard like stone, cold and unfeeling. They have no compassion or sympathy for anyone but themselves, so they treat others harshly and even cruelly. A wicked man who knows God’s law but doesn’t obey it is called an “unbelieving sinner” (1 John 3:4).
