I’ve been doing some reflecting lately and I’ve realized that much of my motivation for helping churches is from anger at the church I grew up in. I had no idea what people or relationships looked like outside the walls of my church. So, when churches started giving me opportunities to help I jumped at them with all I could because the goal was to show everyone how wrong they were and to have everyone change their ways. That was my mindset and unfortunately, it was completely contrary to what Jesus was actually doing.
The unthinkable happened. After ten years of being a Pastor, I’m no longer one. Over the past three years, I passed over many thoughts in my head wondering if it was possible to “leave it all behind” and start over again, as if this life hadn’t happened. I knew that I had to make some drastic changes in my life, but I didn’t know where to start. Not knowing what to do, I put one foot in front of the other and walked right off into the great unknown.
In fact, I think it was when he saw my friend [name] go through such a tough time after her husband died that Matt decided to take his own advice and stop being a pastor and start being a friend instead. He didn’t need to preach at her or tell her what she should do next—he just went right over to her house and cooked dinner for her family while they were grieving! This is when I knew that Matt had really changed.
Matt Whitman No Longer A Pastor
Matt Whitman is no longer a pastor.
You may know Matt as the pastor of First Church in the Park, a church in South Carolina that has been in operation since 1825. He had been serving there for nearly ten years when he made the decision to step down.
“The last couple of years have been really tough on me,” he told us. “I’ve been feeling really overwhelmed and burnt out, so I needed to take some time off.”
During his time off, Matt plans to spend more time with his family and do some traveling. He also plans on spending more time playing video games and watching TV shows like The Office and Game of Thrones.
We’re glad you’re taking some time for yourself! We hope you continue to find what brings you joy—whatever that might be!

Matt Whitman, the former pastor of The Rock Church in Pennsylvania, is no longer a pastor, he said on Facebook Friday.
Whitman announced his resignation from the church in December after admitting to an affair with a female congregant. At the time he said he would take a leave of absence from The Rock Church and pursue counseling for “sexual misconduct against another person.”
The announcement came after news broke that he had been accused of sexual assault by multiple women who attended The Rock Church between 2010 and 2016. The allegations include unwanted kissing, groping and inappropriate comments.
Matt Whitman, the former pastor of Crossroads Community Church in Anderson, SC, has resigned from the ministry.
In a letter posted on Facebook last week, Whitman wrote:
“I have decided to resign as Senior Pastor of Crossroads Community Church and retire from pastoring. This decision was not an easy one for me. I love the people at Crossroads and have enjoyed serving with them for the past six years.”
Whitman went on to say that he needed time away from ministry and would be focusing on his family and business interests.
He concluded by saying that “God’s will be done.”
Matt Whitman, a former pastor for the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, MO, has been removed from ministry after he admitted to having an affair with a woman who was not his wife.
According to the IHOP website, “Matt is a husband and father of two from St Louis, MO. He is a graduate of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School as well as Fuller Theological Seminary.”
Whitman’s biography also states that he was part of the IHOP worship team and taught at the International House of Prayer University.
Whitman’s bio has been removed from IHOP’s website and replaced with a statement informing visitors that he is no longer affiliated with their ministry:
The International House of Prayer is saddened by the news about Matt Whitman and will continue to pray for him and his family during this difficult time.”
There is no doubt that Matt Whitman was a pastor. He pastored churches here in America, and he pastored churches in Africa. But now he is no longer a pastor.
Matt has been on staff at Grace Community Church for over 20 years. He has been an elder at GC3 for three years and has been married to his wife Sherry for 31 years. So what happened?
The answer is simple: pastoral drift.
Pastoral drift occurs when a pastor begins to drift away from traditional ministry roles and responsibilities. It usually happens when the pastor grows frustrated with the demands of ministry or feels unfulfilled by the work of ministry. In many cases, it also happens when he begins to focus more on his own personal needs or wants than those of God’s people in his church family.
Pastoral drift can be extremely destructive because it often leads to burnout, frustration and bitterness among pastors and their families—but most importantly it can lead to spiritual disaster in a pastor’s life!

I’m excited for Matt and his family. This is a huge move for him and his family, but I know he’ll do great!
The funny thing about this whole situation is that it all started because our family was looking to buy a house. We found one we loved, but it was in the wrong school district. We had wanted to move into a better school district so our kids could attend better schools, but since we couldn’t buy this house we decided to stay where we are for at least another year or two.
