John was a Jew who came to believe in Jesus as the Messiah, or Savior. He wrote this gospel so that people would know how they could have eternal life through Jesus.
The word gospel means “good news.” The good news is that God sent his Son into the world to save us from sin (Romans 5:8). The word gospel also refers to a book that contains this good news—the four books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (Luke 24:44–47).

John presents Jesus Christ as God’s final self-revelation, God’s final word. Here God says to us: this is who I am; look at me; believe in me, here in human flesh, here in this man, my eternal Son, Jesus Christ.

In the gospel of John, Jesus’ ministry is clearly defined as that of the Messiah. He is called the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (1:29). Yet, he also reveals himself as being both human and divine (1:14).
John’s gospel has long been known for its emphasis on Jesus’ deity and his relationship to God. This emphasis is reflected in many ways throughout his gospel; however, there are three main points that John wants us to know about Jesus:
Jesus is the Messiah – The gospel begins with an introduction to Jesus as the Word (Logos) who was in the beginning with God and who was God (1:1-18). This introduction sets up a central theme throughout John’s gospel – that Jesus is fully divine and not merely human like other prophets or messiahs before him.
Jesus came from heaven – Throughout this gospel we are told that Jesus came down from heaven (7:37; 8:23; 9:38; 11:25; 12:46; 13:3; 16:28) where he was in a place called heaven (6:62). It traditionally appears last in the New Testament canon, after the Gospel of Matthew, Gospel of Mark, and Gospel of Luke. However, critical consensus has not found this order to be reliable. The gospel is anonymous. Early church tradition attributes all four canonical gospels to John the Apostle and his associates, although he denied this himself.
