It cannot be denied that God hates idolatry. However, it can be debated as to why God feels the way he does about idolatry. Religion is something that is deep-seated within our society and the concept of worshiping multiple gods seems appealing to some people. When we examine what the Bible has to say about idolatry, it could serve as a warning for those who are considering worshiping idols, or for those who may already be doing so. In this article will examine several verses from both the Old and New Testaments and explain the scriptures why God despises idolatry.
Scripture About Idolatry Verses in the Bible talk about how God feels about idols and idolatry, as well as man’s need to worship God alone. Scripture About Idolatry is covered in the book of Leviticus, Psalms, and several other books of the Bible. This Scriptural passage is outlined below with both NIV and KJV translations.
People don’t like their evil exposed and people don’t like you exposing anyone else so you don’t expose them. These so-called believers today will go against God’s Word and stand up for the devil and fight against God by condoning and supporting wickedness. An example of this is the many so-called Christian homosexuality supporters. How can you love what God hates?

How can you love music that blasphemes God? You’re nothing without God. Isn’t He your Father? How can you go against Him and stand up for Satan?
You are to hate everything that God hates. Every biblical leader stood up against evil and many even lost their lives for speaking against it. There is a reason Jesus says true believers will be hated and persecuted. If you desire to live a godly life you will be persecuted and there is no way around it.
That is why many believers stay quiet whenever they’re on the hot seat they hush up in fear of man. Jesus spoke up, Stephen spoke up, Paul spoke up so why are we quiet? We must not be afraid to rebuke others. If someone is going astray from Christ are you going to be silent so they won’t hate you or are you going to humbly and lovingly say something?
The Holy Spirit will convict the world of its sins. If we stop defending Christianity, exposing evil, rebuking false teachers, and confronting believers we will have more people lost and led astray. More people will believe false teachings I mean look how many people twist “thou shall not judge.”
When you remain quiet then you start joining wickedness and remember God is not mocked. Stop being part of the world, expose it instead and save lives. The person who truly loves Christ is the one who’s going to stand up for Christ no matter if they lose friends, family, or if the world hates us. The people who hate Christ are going to read this and say, “stop judging.”

4. Titus 1:10-13 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. If he also ignores the congregation, regard him as an unbeliever and a tax collector.
Why God Hates Idolatry
The Bible says that God hates idolatry because it is a form of rebellion against Him. Idolatry is an attempt to replace the true God with a false substitute. The Bible describes idolatry as spiritual adultery and prostitution. In fact, the word “idol” comes from the Greek word eidolon, which means image or reflection.
God has made it clear that He does not want us to worship anything or anyone other than Him (Deut. 4:15-19). This includes other people, ourselves, money and possessions, sex, fame and fortune – anything!
In Deuteronomy 5:6-9, the Lord says: “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God . . . I will visit the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.”
In Isaiah 40:18-19 we read: “To whom then will ye liken God? Or what likeness will ye compare unto him? The workman melteth a graven image, and gathereth silver and gold; he openeth a pit, and diggeth it; he falleth down into the grave; he riseth up again; he buildeth his house as a moth flieth away.”
God hates idolatry because it’s a lie, and He is a truth-teller. Idolatry is not just a lie about God; it’s also a lie about ourselves. It tells us that we are what we own or what we think or what we say or do. It tells us that our worth and significance come from these things.
God says this is not true. God says you are made in His image, which means you have worth and significance because of who He is, not because of what He has given you.
The Bible is very clear on what God thinks of idolatry.
The first commandment clearly states that we are to have no other gods before Him. The second commandment goes even further by telling us that we are not to make any graven images or worship them.
It is interesting to note that these two commandments are only a part of the ten commandments found in Exodus 20:1-17.
In fact, there are many other scriptures in the Old Testament that condemn idolatry:
1 Kings 19:4 – And he said unto him, Hear thou therefore the word of the LORD: I saw the LORD sitting on his throne, and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right hand and on his left…
2 Kings 17:16-18 – And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images [idols]…
Isaiah 44:9-19 – All ye are wearied in the multitude of your counsels…
Jeremiah 10:14-15 – …they trust in vanity, and speak lies; (15) which believe not…
God hates idolatry. He hates it so much that He will not even tolerate it in His own people, Israel.
In Exodus 20:3 God tells the people of Israel, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” In Deuteronomy 5:7 we find that this commandment is repeated and reinforced: “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.”
God has a particular reason for this commandment and it is revealed to us in 1 Corinthians 10:20-21: “No one should seek his own good, but the good of others. For I have been hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after me.”
God’s commandment against idolatry is based on His desire for us to love Him alone with all our hearts. He wants us to be completely devoted to Him alone because He is worthy of our complete devotion. Our love for Him should never be divided between Him and anyone or anything else
Scripture About Idolatry
Idolatry is a sin that God hates and punishes. The Bible says that worshipping idols is a serious offense in the eyes of God (Deuteronomy 4:15; 1 Corinthians 10:14). This is because idols are mere creations of man, and have no power to do anything. Only God has this power (Psalm 115:4-8).
God hates idolatry because it turns people away from Him and leads them into darkness (Isaiah 48:5). Idolaters are also guilty of pride for thinking that they can make something that is greater than God Himself (Isaiah 44:9-20).
“You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the shape of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them…” (Exodus 20:4-5).
God hates idolatry because it is a rejection of God Himself. When we make an image of anything else and worship it instead of God, we are denying His existence and authority over us. When we choose to follow another god or to worship something other than Him, we are rejecting His love and His provision for our needs. The first commandment was given so that we would know who God is and what He expects from us as His creation.”
1 Kings 12:28-33 – The Old Testament teaches that idolatry is sinful. God is jealous for His glory and will not allow other gods to be exalted above Him.
Exodus 20:3-6 – God hates idolatry because He is the only true God.
Deuteronomy 7:5-25 – God forbids His people from worshipping false gods because He loves them and wants them to know Him as He truly is.
Isaiah 2:8-15 – Idolatry leads people away from the true God and causes them to worship other things instead of Him. This can lead to rebellion against God’s law, which results in disaster.
Jeremiah 2:11-13 – God warns His people not to fall into idolatry like their fathers did before them or they will be punished by exile from their land because of it.
The Bible says that God hates idolatry (Deuteronomy 5:9).
God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because they were so wicked and sinful (Genesis 18:20-21).
When Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments, the people of Israel demanded a king “like all the other nations” have (1 Samuel 8:5). When God gave them Saul as their first king, they demanded a god “like all the other nations” have (1 Samuel 8:8). So when they made Saul king over them, this displeased God greatly (1 Samuel 8:7-9).
Scripture About Idolatry
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)
“I am the Lord, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images.” (Isaiah 42:8)
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.” (Exodus 20:4)
“And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him. Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel, so that He forsook them.” (2 Chronicles 33:6-7)
