A buddy of mine from last year requested that I jot down several texts from the Bible that dealt with the topic of judgment. As I am both a pastor and a writer, I compiled and transcribed numerous of the quotations that dealt with the topic of judgement. I realized thereafter that they were worthy of a blog entry. This article seeks to do so by quoting relevant passages from the New International Version of the Bible (NIV) about the subject of judgment.
There are few subjects in the Bible as divisive and puzzling as the subject of Judging. Many Christians find the Bible’s teachings on judgment to be disturbing, particularly if they have experienced unfair judgment themselves. In this piece, I’ve included a number of biblical passages that address the topic of judgment. The articles here provide further detail. Verses from the Bible on Prejudice and Appearance
Judging is a negative trait. However, this isn’t necessarily a negative thing to have happen. A person’s harsh evaluation of you might have a catastrophic effect. People have expressed their opinions on you throughout your life. How did you feel about this? Were you given a sense of acceptance or rejection? Did you grow as a person? Did you come away from this with the sense that you knew something that should be altered?

The following Bible verses are about judging.
Judges 7:1-24
7:1 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early and encamped beside the spring of Harod; so that the camp of Midian was in the valley. But the LORD said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hand, lest Israel boast over Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 2 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling let him return and depart early from Mount Gilead.'” So 22,000 men returned and 10,000 remained. 3 And the LORD said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water (for I have decided to test them for you there), and I will test them for you there.” 4 So he brought down to the water Sixty-eight thousand men who drew swords; but all the rest of Israel were unwarlike. 5 And he said to them, “I now give this order: Every man shall pass through his own tribe and make a selection of one cow per

1 Corinthians 5:12-13 (NIV)
For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”
Galatians 6:1 (NIV)
Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.
Hebrews 12:14 (NIV)
Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.
The Bible has a lot to say about judging others, but here are some of the most important verses:
Romans 14:1-23 – “As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him and do not be offended by his conscience. But not to argue with people over doubtful things. For one believes he may eat everything, while the weak person eats only vegetables.”
1 Corinthians 10:12-13 – “So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
-Matthew 7:1-5 KJV
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, beholdeth, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
Matthew 5:21-26 KJV
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother Raca (or empty head) shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say Thou fool, shall be
“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”—Matthew 7:1-2
“Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”—John 7:24
“For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.”—James 2:11-12
-Matthew 7:1
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
-John 7:24-26
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. For even as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
1 John 4:20-21
“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”
Bible Verses About Judging Others Niv
The Bible says to “judge not, that ye be not judged.” If you judge someone, they might judge you.
1 Corinthians 4:5-6
2 Timothy 3:2-4
Romans 14:1-12
Matthew 7:1-5
The Bible is full of verses about judging others. Here are some examples:
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:1-5)
“Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” (John 7:24)
“Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. For if any one thinks himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself
The Bible has a lot to say about judging people. But it also has a lot to say about being judged. And the two concepts aren’t necessarily connected.
Judging someone else is different from making a decision based on what you know or think you know about them. For example, if you see someone steal something from a store, you can judge that person for doing that. Or if you are aware of someone’s reputation for cheating people, you can judge them for being dishonest or untrustworthy people.
But if you’re aware of these things and then decide not to trust them, then it’s not really fair to judge them because they haven’t done anything wrong yet (only acted in accordance with their nature). If they do something wrong later on, then that’s when it becomes fair to judge them — once they have done something wrong and proven themselves to be untrustworthy (because they’ve already proven themselves untrustworthy).
So when Jesus tells us not to judge others (Matthew 7:1), what he means is that we shouldn’t make judgments about others based on our own opinions and feelings — because often times these opinions and feelings will be inaccurate and unfair.
1 Corinthians 4:5
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.
Matthew 7:1-2
“Do not judge, or you too will be judged.”
Romans 14:4
Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
Romans 2:1-3
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?
James 4:11-12
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother,[c] speaks evil against the law and judges the law
Matthew 7:1
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.” (Matthew 7:1)
Luke 6:37
“Judge not, and you shall not be judged; condemn not, and you shall not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)
Romans 14:4-5
“Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in their own mind.” (Romans 14:4-5)
Bible Verses On Judging By Appearance
We judge people all the time. We judge them on how they look, what they wear, how they talk, and even how they smell!
The Bible says that we are supposed to judge people by their character and not their appearance (see 1 Samuel 16:7).
This is hard to do. It’s even harder when you’re doing the judging. But it’s something we need to work on if we want to be more Christ-like.
Bible verses about judging by appearances.
I will not look at the altars of Bethel; you have done evil in setting up your sacred stones to the Baals; I will not listen to your songs, nor will I put any weight on your incense.
You who turn justice into poison and cast righteousness to the ground,
who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with wickedness,
who oppose the Lord and revile his name – why do you expect a blessing from the Lord, when you are all but a curse? (Amos 5:9-15)
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you. Forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us into temptation but deliver us from evil. (Psalm 86:5-7)
“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give what is holy to dogs; nor throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn and tear you in pieces. Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Matthew 7:5-7)
“Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” (John 7:24)
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.” (Matthew 7:1)
“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.” (James 1:13)

Matthew 7:1-5: “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is a log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
Romans 2:1-11: “Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape God’s judgment?”
