There are several verses in the Bible that mention prayers for the dead. One such verse is Matthew 27:52-53 which reads: “The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”
Another verse which mentions prayers for those who have died is John 11:41-42 “So they removed the stone from the place where Jesus was lying. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.” And I know that You always hear Me; but because of the people who stand by I said this, so that they may believe that You sent Me.’

God of mercy and compassion, we pray for all those who have died without a Catholic funeral or sacramental confession. We ask you to comfort and console their loved ones and friends by your abundant mercy and forgiveness. Give them strength to bear their grief with patience.
