Do Pastors Live In Churches

Have you ever sat in church, lulled by the sound of your pastor’s sermon, then suddenly wondered how much that pastor makes doing this job? And not just how much the pastor makes, but how he actually gets paid. Does he empty the silver trays of donations every Sunday and slide the money under his mattress?

No, of course not. But payment occurs in a variety of ways.

Tip
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2020 the average salary was $51,940 annually, or $25.00 hourly. Many are also provided with a free home or housing allowance if there isn’t a rectory. In addition, pastors are often paid gratuities for performing basic church functions, such as weddings or funerals.

Annual Salary
Most pastors are paid an annual salary by their church. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2016 the average salary was $45,740 annually, or $21.99 hourly. This is the median. At the low end, members of the clergy earned only $23,830 annually, and the highest earning pastors earned $79,110. Also, some churches may be too poor to pay an annual salary to the pastor.

Pastors May Have Free Housing
Most pastors are provided with a rectory, a house owned by the church where they are able to live free of charge during their time as pastor of the church. This is an old practice, beginning in the 15th century, but it’s especially a big perk if you live in a expensive city in the 21st century, such as Los Angeles or New York City.

Pastors May Receive a Housing Allowance
If your church doesn’t have a rectory, it typically provides the pastor with a housing allowance. Sometimes called a parsonage allowance or a rental allowance, the great thing about this allowance is that it doesn’t have to be claimed as income on federal income taxes. However, pastors must declare this allowance on their self-employment taxes.

Side Gigs
Pastors often earn extra money from congregants in the form of gratuities for performing standard church ceremonies, such as weddings, baptisms and funerals. While pastors perform these services as part of their job, in some churches there is an unspoken understanding of the fee for certain services. A wedding could bring in between $100 and $500, whereas a funeral might merit $100 to $300. It all depends on the church.

Many pastors also earn extra income by writing books or recording sermons, depending upon the size and popularity of their church. This is especially prevalent among preachers of mega churches.

Pastors don’t typically go into the profession for the money, but you can earn a respectable living as a pastor and also follow your passion for religion and leading a community.

Nuns play a leading role in the spiritual life of the public, often doing important social work with a selfless and humble attitude. Nuns do not get paid the same way other people do for working. They turn any earnings over to their congregation, which they trust to provide a stipend that will cover minimum living expenses. Their pay thus depends on their community, not on how much or where they work.

Tip
Nuns take a vow of poverty which means they must relinquish all their earnings to the Church. Essentially, nuns don’t have a salary.

Average Earnings
Nuns may work for the benefit of the Church in any profession, such as social worker, accountant, day care worker, teacher or even doctor. This makes it virtually impossible to estimate average earnings. However, nuns give up any earnings they may have to the Church, so in essence, nuns don’t have a salary, even if an average were able to be assessed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, all members of the clergy make a median annual wage of $47,100. In terms of an hourly rate, this is about $22.65. Median means the salary in the middle, so that half of all clergy earn more than this amount and half earn less.

Vow of Poverty
All nuns take a vow of poverty. The vow of poverty is intended to help the nuns remind themselves that God, not man, will supply everything that is necessary, and that spiritual riches matter more than material wealth. The vow of poverty also is supposed to make it easier for a nun to move about various geographical regions at the calling of God, as there is less to transport. Because of the vow of poverty, nuns relinquish any income to their order, which issues them a stipend that covers basic living expenses. Any money from earnings not given back to the nun via the stipend supports the Catholic ministry.

Stipend Varies By Location
The Catholic Church advocates a nun’s vow of poverty, but it also recognizes that the cost of living is different based on the geographical location. The stipend is a modest sum paid for food and housing. Stipend amounts vary depending on the location and number of nuns sharing a home. Where the nuns earn an income in institutions such as hospitals, schools and orphanages, they generally will pool these resources back into the running of the home where they live.

Understanding the Tax Issue
Most stipends from the Church are not taxable. Because nuns take a vow of poverty and are members of religious orders, the Internal Revenue Service allows nuns to take exemptions for self-employment and income tax in certain circumstances. Nuns are exempt from income taxes if they make money for services performed as an agent of the order, or if the duties they perform outside of the order are the same or very similar to duties performed as an agent of the order.

Can A Church Survive Without A Pastor

Every church needs a pastor or a preacher. The importance of having a leading figure who guides sermons and worship cannot be understated. Without a central leader, every church would risk falling into disarray.

But which is a more important figure to have in the church, a leader, a pastor, or a preacher?

When done right, the answer would be all three rolled into one. Strong leadership is the central pillar of the church, bringing people together to form a community through worship. But, what exactly does a pastor do?

Keep reading to learn more about the qualities of a good church leader and what their responsibilities are.

What’s a pastor’s role in the church?

Though the ins and outs of their role will change depending on the church, pastors are generally expected to be the person who leads a church. The central role involves weekly preaching but extends to taking care of the congregation, helping people to overcome life challenges and strengthen their faith. They assume the position of church administrator, too, and oversee the day-to-day running of events.

What’s the difference between a pastor and a preacher?

While a pastor’s role is incredibly varied, a preacher is someone who preaches. Simply put, all pastors are preachers, but not all preachers are pastors. If your church has a preacher who delivers sermons and spreads the word of God with charisma and enthusiasm but doesn’t assume the role of pastor, you need to have a separate person who runs the leadership side of things.

Why church leadership matters.

A church leader has the power to influence the members of the church, which in turn impacts the wider community. Many responsibilities fall under their title, from delegating tasks and assigning team leaders to directing where resources and donations are spent. If your church has a pastor or a preacher that fails to do this or is unapproachable in their management style, you might have a problem.

What Is A Leader In The Church

Strong pastors who do not shy away from their leadership responsibilities can do wonders for a church. Some preachers fall into the trap of assuming they can assume pastoral responsibilities because of their strong preaching skills, but this isn’t always the case. If you think your church is struggling because of your pastor’s questionable leadership skills, there are steps you can take.

Characteristics of a strong church leader.

As church leaders have an incredible amount of power, you need to have faith in their quality of character. Trustworthy, open, and communicative people tend to be a perfect choice, as they fill people with faith. Just like shepherds lead their flock away from danger and into safety, pastors must guide the congregation in a positive, fulfilling, and generous way. You will see dedicated pastors taking the time to check in with their church members because they genuinely care.

How to spot a bad church leader.

On knees praying at church

Bad leaders are everywhere, whether in the workplace, at school, or when playing sports. Typically, bad leaders don’t know how to listen. They take disagreements personally and stay closed-minded in the face of criticism. While there are many different types of bad leadership, if you find your pastor getting angry and defensive or shutting down conversations when challenged, they are not who you want to be in charge of your church.

The dangers of bad leadership.

A leader can make or break any project. If they chose to, they could waste valuable church resources and stunt the ministry’s growth, prioritizing their own desires instead of the good of the community. Bad leadership can kill a sense of mission in your church, make well-meaning volunteers lose direction, and stop members of the congregation from feeling like they have a true connection with the church.

What can I do if my pastor is a bad leader?

Just like the rest of us, pastors are imperfect humans. They will make mistakes, have struggles, and feel lost sometimes. So, if your pastor has slipped up once or twice, it’s time to cut them some slack. Leading a church is a massive responsibility and takes a huge amount of dedication. The work you see is only the tip of the iceberg. But, if this continues and becomes a pattern rather than an exception, tell another church worker your concerns.

What if I see moral failings in my pastor?

If things get worse and you see morally questionable behavior by your pastor it becomes something a whole lot more serious. The power that church leaders have can be used in toxic ways to manipulate the congregation and drive them away from God. Before you take action, evaluate your heart to consider if you have any bad intentions toward them. Spend some time connecting with God and praying for them, as they must be in a dark place.

Although a pastor is the shepherd, they need strong church workers, kids’ ministry leaders, and volunteers to help everything run smoothly. By offering small group leaders training courses, you boost the overall quality of your church’s leadership. And, strong leaders help to lead the next generation of leadership, so make sure your church is doing it right. Not sure if you are a good leader? Try this self-assessment to see where you rank.
