When I was growing up, my parents never told me to be a Christian or to follow Jesus. They didn’t take me to church or teach me about the Bible. We watched Miracle of the Heart on television, and I learned something unique: that you can have a heart attack and have an open-heart surgery and still have a good chance of living–if doctors treat you in time. Francis Chan is a Chinese-American Christian author and speaker. He has written several books and hosts a television show, “The Good Life”, which airs on the Trinity Broadcasting Network.
Chan was born in Taiwan to missionary parents, and moved to Canada at age seven. After graduating from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, he pastored two churches for eight years before stepping down to homeschool his four children. In 2005, he began speaking at conferences around the world.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24) ❖ Question #1: When we use the term “following Jesus” or a “follower of Jesus” what do we mean by “follow”? The word just seems to naturally imply that when you are following something then you are behind it. Whatever it is you are following is leading the way. If you are going to continue to follow it then you are going to have to fully submit to its direction. The moment you try and alter the direction of the leader then you are no longer following. You are simply trying to lead from the back. A follower of Jesus is someone who has entrusted their life to Him and has submitted to Him as the Lord over their lives. The disciples called Jesus Teacher and Lord and He acknowledged that this was exactly right (John 13:13). At its most basic level, following Jesus means to follow His teaching and obey His commands. BASIC – PART II: FOLLOW JESUS 1 A disciple in Jesus’ day was someone who devoted their lives to learning and being trained under a rabbi’s (teacher) teaching. The disciple would commit himself to follow the rabbi around wherever he went and imitate the types of things the rabbi did. A disciple would eventually become just like his rabbi. A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. (Luke 6:40) ❖ Question #2: What are some things we can do to learn how to be more like Jesus? It makes very little sense if someone is following Jesus as His disciple and doesn’t begin to start living a life that looks similar to His. Simply going to church, repeating a prayer and identifying yourself with Christianity does not mean that you are a follower of Jesus. It’s like Jesus saying, “Hey, would you guys mind identifying yourselves with Me in some way? Don’t worry, I don’t actually care if you do anything I do or change your lifestyle at all. I’m just looking for people who are willing to say they believe in Me and call themselves Christians.” – Francis Chan If we want to become more like Jesus then we are going to have to start learning more about the things Jesus said and the things Jesus did. Prayer, studying Scripture and being trained by someone more mature in their faith are practical ways to start. Again, following Jesus is pretty basic – learn what He says to do and then go do it. Jesus is clear: BASIC – PART II: FOLLOW JESUS 2 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?” (Luke 6:46) “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) ❖ Question #3: Do you believe that you can be a follower of Jesus and not do the things he says we ought to do? “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14) There is an easier way to live your life rather than actually following Jesus, but this way leads to destruction, eternal punishment, and separation from God. There’s a scene in John 6 where Jesus just got through teaching a tough message that was so difficult for people to hear that everyone left and only His 12 disciples remained. Jesus asks them if they’d like to join the crowd and leave too, but Peter replies: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69) Following Jesus may be the less popular path and a tough road to travel, but there is no other path we can follow that leads people to eternal life and to true fellowship with God. BASIC – PART II: FOLLOW JESUS 3 ❖ Question #4: If you believe these words of Jesus to be true, would you say that you really have any other choice but to faithfully follow Jesus and commit your entire life to His Lordship and Teaching? Not only do we really have no other choice but why would we want to choose anything different? Jesus is the Creator who came down into His creation in order to redeem and rescue it from its hopeless condition. Jesus is the servant King who took a stand on the frontline alone and sacrificed Himself for the sake of His people. There is no such thing as a love and devotion greater than this. No greater love exists! Therefore no one is more worthy to be followed than the God who became a man and gave up His life so that we may live. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:7-8)

There are only two things that set Christianity apart from every other religion in the world: Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
You cannot serve God and money at the same time.
In our culture today, we tend to put more value on things like self-esteem and “me-centered” thinking than we do on obedience to God’s Word. That is why Jesus said, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching” (John 14:23). When you love Jesus enough to obey His teachings, then you will have a peace that passes understanding because you have been obedient to God’s will for your life.
“Jesus said, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.'” (John 6:35)
The word “hungry” is used three times in this passage. Jesus is speaking about his spiritual food, which satisfies all longing for satisfaction. He’s talking about the word of God and the gospel of salvation.
This passage reveals that God’s Word always satisfies hunger and thirst. It always fills the deepest longings of our hearts because it is truth. When we study the Bible, we discover God’s plan for our lives and how we can fulfill our purpose on earth. We learn how to relate with others through love and forgiveness instead of judgment and condemnation. We find peace with God through Jesus Christ, who suffered in our place so that we might live eternally with Him in heaven someday!
As Christians, we know that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness through His Son Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:3). We also know that Jesus promises us an abundant life here on earth as well as eternity with Him in heaven! The key is knowing His Word — knowing what He wants us to do here on earth so
