Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, is one of the most popular deities in Hinduism. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati; his name literally means “lord of the hosts.” The story goes that Parvati created Ganesha out of sandalwood paste to guard her while she bathed. When Shiva came to see her, he found that Ganesha had not let anyone in. Enraged, Shiva cut off Ganesha’s head. When Parvati finally emerged from the bath, she was horrified to see her son’s headless body lying on the floor. She put his head back on his body and breathed life into him again. Since then, Ganesha has been known as Ganapati (“Leader of the Hosts”), Vinayaka (“He Who Removes Obstacles”), or Vighneshvara (“Lord of Obstacles”). He became a very popular god among all classes because he removes obstacles from people’s lives and helps them to overcome their problems.
